Testimonial for Steven Halligan and Halligan’s Fitness Personal Training, Robina, Gold Coast by David Wormald
Dear Steve,
Recent Interview of Steven Halligan from Halligan’s Fitness
1) Can you tell us a little bit about you as a personal trainer and the services, training you offer to your clients?
I have 20 years experience and have trained people in the USA, UK, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast. I train in 1hour and 1/2Hour sessions, targeted for mainly for weight loss, however I also train clients for Strength gain, to strengthen their bones, rehabilitation and for sporting related goals.
2) What’s the history behind your passion for personal training, how did you get started training people?
I wanted to help others to feel good when they look at themselves in the mirror, I remember when I first got back to Australia after training overseas for 3 years, I went to put an ad in the Yellow Pages and the sales lady that was selling me the advertisement told me that she could not look at herself in the mirror anymore, I asked her to meet with me and 8 weeks later she had lost 14 kilos and had fit into a dress she had not worn in 25 years, this for me was the one event that kept me in the Fitness Industry all of those years ago.
3) It seems that as Australian’s we keep trying to get fitter, but not too many out there manage to achieve their goals. What is the secret behind a successful personal training program?
Consistency, consistency, consistency! It is like a snowball rolling down a mountain, it needs to gather momentum, once you are on track and you start to see change, whether it is weight loss, tone, feeling better or strength etc you will then be spurred on by the results and by people giving you compliments. This is when you start to become unstoppable, just remember “Rome was not built in a day”. Do something everyday even if it is saying “NO” to that bowl of ice cream, or it may be deciding and then going for a 5 to 30 minute walk, just do something positive every day toward achieving your goal and learn how to say “NO” to the things that you know will derail you on your mission to achieve your goal.
4) Personal training is surely not just about “doing exercise” , what can you tell us about the physiological part behind any training? How important is the motivation and the mind set?
The mind set is the most important thing for the achievement of any goal, to firstly start on your journey, to then have the strength to stay on target and to complete what you have set out to do
5) What makes a good personal trainer?
Qualifications, Experience, Being Personable, Understanding, Passionate and Being a motivator!
6) Tell us a little bit about your personal training sessions and classes, what type of training can someone expect while working out with you?
To work at a comfortable level, to be understood, to be pushed a little further every session, but at the same time not to be sick from being pushed to the absolute maximum (I do not believe in this kind of training at all). I do circuit training or strength training exercises.
7) How important is nutrition in the path to achieve any personal training goal?
It is very important, I am the only Personal trainer that Weight Watchers has referred to for the past 10 years on the Gold Coast and I believe that it is all about input (what food you put in your mouth) and output (what volume of exercise you do). If your input is greater than your output you will put on weight and if your output is greater than your input you will lose weight, it is that simple.
We all know there are many personal trainers out there, what do we need to ask to a personal trainer before starting a program, how can we guarantee we are a good match to work together?
What Qualifications do they hold? (Degree, Diploma, Certificate III or IV), Are they registered with Fitness Australia? Are they insured? How long have they been a Personal Trainer?
9) What is a normal day in your life as a personal trainer?
I get up early and the first thing I do is to exercise for about 15 minutes to start my day (everyday of the year) and then I get on with my day, on work days I start early training my clients and then I usually train until roughly 10am and then I do work for Rebel Sport as their Business Development Manager for South East QLD and then later in the day approximately 2pm I start training again until around 8pm, then have dinner and then write programs for the following day (Pretty Full On)
10) Can you tell us about a personal training success story that can inspire us? Maybe one of your students? Maybe your own?
I have had many success stories with clients as I have been in the industry for so long like the lady from Yellow Pages that lost 14 kilos in 8 weeks. I have also had a lady that could not get up off the floor without someone helping her up and after 12 weeks she could get up without anyone helping her up or even without using her hands to push her up off the floor. I also had another lady that could not touch her toes and she had not been able to for her whole life and she was 40 years old and after 14 weeks she could touch her toes for the first time in her life.
11) Now, for the last question… we invite you to plug your personal training service. What makes you a Top Personal Trainer. what message do you want to send to anyone reading this and thinking of contacting you to start their personal training program?

Visceral fat and Your Body
Visceral fat and Your Body
So you’re wondering what is visceral fat? It’s the fat deposits between the internal organs of the body.
People with high levels of visceral fat are apple shaped or have pot bellies. The bad thing about this is that the fat is around the body’s internal organs which is very dangerous to the person carrying it.
People who are overweight or obese are more likely to have large amounts of visceral fat but normal-weight range people can also have too much of it.
Exercise is an excellent way to help reduce the amount of visceral fat you carry, according to researchers from the Duke University Medical Centre, who found that the more people exercised, and the higher the intensity of the exercise, the faster they lost their excess visceral fat.
The importance of making sure that when it comes to exercise and making changes in your life the most important thing to do is to make sure that your mind is in the right place first.
When it comes to getting on track and staying on track, it is important to be at the point in your mind, where there are NO OTHER OPTIONS.

If I continue to put on weight gradually, what weight will I be in 10 to 20 years?
How will this weight affect my body, my internal organs, my heart, my kidneys, my Blood Pressure, my circulation, my overall health etc?
It is important to make sure that you are really are committed to exercising, before starting.

Ask yourself what are your health and fitness goals?
Ask yourself what are your Health and Fitness GOALS?
The importance of having a goal with your health and fitness makes a big difference between waking up every morning and training your guts out and not having a goal, just doing it because you feel you should, doesn’t sound like much fun does it?
Imagine how different it would feel if you are training to get in shape for your wedding day, if you were training to lose 20kilos to get back to the size you were when you were 18 or if you were trying to make the Olympics?
If you knew every morning you woke up to try and win a gold medal at the Olympics, do you think it would make a massive difference to your mind set. In the long runyou would find it a lot easier to get up early in the morning if you have a goal.
Basically what I am getting at, is that it is important what you choose to focus on. It may not be a gold medal but you could save your own life, for example it could stop you from having a heart attack, a stroke, a weight issue or becoming a diabetic.
SET YOUR SELF UP FOR SUCCESS!!!
Make sure that when it comes to exercise and making changes in your life the most important thing to do is to make sure that your mind is in the right place first.

Women’s Weight Loss, osteoporosis, Fitness and exercise
Women’s Weight Loss and Fitness
Osteoporosis in women plays a particularly important role as the years progress.
What you can do to help your body in these years is to start a resistance training program.
Resistance training has been proven to decrease the risk of Osteoporosis – This has been shown by an increase in bone mineral density whilst participating in resistance training, so incorporating it into your fitness routine is important in helping the effects of osteoporosis.
Women in particular (1 in 4 by the age of 60) they have about 30% less bone than men, women also have even more bone loss during menopause when estrogen levels decrease. Women with smaller frames are at greater risk. (A woman in her eighties can have lost up to two thirds of her skeleton).
Excess amounts of alcohol, caffeine, protein and phosphorus (from meats and fizzy drinks). Insufficient vitamin D (the ‘sunshine’ vitamin); and cigarette smoking also assists in the loss of bone mineral density. This leads to the bones becoming weak, brittle and easy to fracture, particularly the ones of the wrist, hips and spine. Loss of height and curvature of the spine may also result.
If you know a person who has low bone mineral density or poor posture get in touch with Halligan’s Fitness

Weight Loss TIPS that are EASY and will help YOU!
Weight Loss TIPS that are EASY and will help YOU!
What are the benefits of water to your body? Nearly 60% of your body weight is water. About 75% of your muscles are made of water. Undoubtedly your overall body health and fitness will improve by increasing you water intake.
Here are 6 truths about your body and the benefits of water:
• Increasing water consumption strengthens muscles in and around the bladder to cope with the load in bladder.
• Helps flush kidneys and liver (Toxin Removal)
• Re-hydrates the skin and body (less headaches & better fresher looking skin)
• Drinking enough water helps many medical ailments, chronic fatigue, allergies, depression, digestive problems, urinary tract problems, constipation and much more
• Drinking enough water actually prevents water retention. Definite benefit in weight loss for women.
• Water contains NO fat and NO kilojoules/calories. A benefit to your health and fitness regime.
How do you know when your body needs WATER?
The body has ways of showing when it needs more water. Thirst is the most obvious sign. However, thirst is also a late signal. Try drinking water in place of snacking, you will often find your body is thirsty not hungry.
Often we read or watch on TV that it is very important to drink at least 2 litres of water per day. Here is a tip for an easy and very simple way to drink this amount of water without altering your daily routine,
Simply have 2 X 1 Litre bottles of water, one at home and one at work. When you wake in the morning try and drink as much of the bottle at home as you can before you go off to work. Then while at work drink all of the bottle you have at work throughout the day finish the 1L bottle before you leave for the day. Then you simply finish off the bottle at home before you go to bed.
This is a simple way to be able to measure the volume of water you consume in a day. Your body will feel rehydrated and your skin will look fresher.
The old 6 glasses a day works well depending on the size of the glass. But if this works for you then something is definitely better than nothing. Always opt for water instead of sweetened fizzy drinks or alcohol, the effect from making these choices is one your body will love you for.
Achieve your weight loss goals today.
